Foundation Getting Disabled Up and Moving

(firmenpresse) - READING, PA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/11/12 -- Chris Kaag, executive director and founder of , will be honored with a resolution on May 1, 2012 in Harrisburg by Rep. Dante Santoni for his efforts in to live active lifestyles.

This honor coincides with the commencement of IM ABLE's adaptive playground project. IM ABLE is partnering with the Gilmore-Henne Community Fund and Berks Youth in Action to build and install an adaptive playground at Opportunity House on June 23rd for children of all abilities to enjoy. Opportunity House is a multi-service organization that provides shelter, supportive housing, and child care for poverty or low-income families in the Reading area.

The IM ABLE Foundation was created by Kaag who became disabled at age 21 as the result of a . His mission is to provide opportunities for disabled individuals to adopt active lifestyles and experience adaptive sports. Through generous support and sponsorships the Foundation achieves its mission through adaptive equipment donations, programming, and awareness events. The Foundation encourages the enabled and the disabled to, "get up and move!" Kaag completed the ING NYC Marathon this past November in the push-rim racing chair division.

The foundation will host its largest fundraising event for the ninth year in Mount Gretna, PA on May 19. The features both able-bodied and and consists of a 500 yard swim, a 16 mile bike and a 5K run. The event also features the , a spin bike and fundraiser and all proceeds will benefit the foundation.

Since December 2011, six disabled individuals in eastern Pennsylvania have been given the gift of freedom from the Foundation.

On Christmas Eve, Meaghan Eppenstein, 11, and Jacob Chalfin, 33, each received a Tourer hand-cycle, a bike that the rider can pedal with their hands. The foundation presented the bikes to Chalfin and Eppenstein after receiving and approving their adaptive equipment grant request.

In January, the foundation met Dan Webb, 42, from Warminster, PA, who had suffered a fall and became paralyzed from the waist down. He was also awarded an Estrada hand-cycle.





On February 10 the Friendship Community in Lititz, PA was awarded a Piggyback bike trailer to allow residents with developmental and intellectual disabilities to safely ride a bike. The trailer can be attached to a standard bike. In late February, Jeremy Schutt, 25, of Grantville, was given a full set of sled hockey equipment during the intermission of a Reading Royals hockey game.
