Minister Raitt Addresses Saint John Port-Sector Stakeholders
(firmenpresse) - SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK -- (Marketwire) -- 04/10/12 -- The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, today addressed port-industry leaders in a speech delivered at the Marco Polo Cruise Terminal. Minister Raitt was accompanied by Mr. Rodney Weston, Member of Parliament for Saint John.
"Canada's ports and the men and women who keep them running play a vital role in the Canadian economy," said Minister Raitt. "Our government has taken concrete steps through the Economic Action Plan to support Canadian workers and businesses with measures that stimulate growth and jobs."
Canada's Economic Action Plan delivers on a number of commitments to help Canadians and businesses. The Labour Program will receive additional operating funds for the Wage Earner Protection Program to bolster the capacity of the Labour Program and Service Canada to ensure the timely provision of these important benefits to Canadians.
The Government of Canada is also introducing legislation to require federally regulated private-sector employers to insure any long-term disability plans they offer to their employees to further protect workers whose employers go bankrupt.
The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, such as the Canada Labour Code. These laws cover industrial relations, health and safety, as well as employment standards, and apply to federally regulated workers and employers.
