Edmonton Economic Development Corporation: Edmonton Meetings and Events Professionals Celebrate National Meetings Industry Day

(firmenpresse) - EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/10/12 -- Greater Edmonton's meeting and event professionals celebrate their industry at (NMID) on April 19 from 7-10am, at the Hall C. NMID is an annual event celebrated by eight cities across Canada. Members from the (MPI) celebrate with a variety of educational and networking activities focusing on the significance of the Canadian meetings industry and the value of meetings to the broader business community.

This year, planners will experience first-hand the award-winning program as it showcases Edmonton's finest talents, creating a long-lasting impression and an interactive experience for participants. Meetings professionals will also learn how the program can be incorporated into future events.

Milena Santoro, co-chair of the NMID 2012 planning committee expresses her enthusiasm for this year's celebration. "This year, NMID's focus is engagement and this is something we are certainly seeing in the industry," says Santoro. "We are seeing planners and suppliers become more engaged in the industry, working together for its success. The industry makes a significant contribution to Edmonton's economy through meetings, conventions and events, which generate spending and contributes to the growth of tourism in Edmonton. We are thrilled to see industry engaged and collaborating."

In 2011, Edmonton Tourism secured 42 convention bookings, and 32,592 room nights with a direct spending impact of $5 million, contributing to the local economy. These numbers show the importance of the meetings and conventions market.

In celebration of this year's theme, engagement, NMID is proud to present a panel presentation: Major trends meeting and event professionals don't dare ignore! Expert panelists include:

Discussion topics will focus on the meetings and conventions industry as it relates to the city, the province and the re-development of the downtown core. Highlights will also include opportunities for meetings and conventions presented by major growth trends and the positive effects on the meetings sector.





All proceeds from the event will be donated to support the food recovery program recently launched by Edmonton's Food Bank. "The industry's contribution to Edmonton's Food Bank shows our commitment to environmentally and socially responsible event planning," says Cliff Higuchi, vice president and general manager of "The Shaw Conference Centre is proud to be a partner of NMID and pleased to host this event to celebrate our local meetings and conventions industry."
