Decatur Animal Hospital Warns Pet Owners of Recalled Pet Foods

Several pet foods have been recalled in the last 12 months, including two dog foods in December 2011 for mold contamination. Dr. Shelly Stevens is warning pet owners about the latest string of pet food recalls. Dr. Stevens, along with fellow veterinarian Dr. Robert Groesch, practices at Fairview Hospital for Animals, and is seeking to raise awareness about the recent pet food recalls.

"These foods include popular store brands like Iams and Purina ONE. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in December 2011, both Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food and Cargill's River Run and Marksman dog foods were the subject of recalls due to concerns with mold contamination. Tests conducted on the food revealed higher than acceptable levels of aflatoxin, a by-product of the Aspergillus flavus fungus.
"Pets who consume contaminated foods may exhibit symptoms of illness, including general lethargy, reluctance to eat, vomiting, diarrhea, and a yellowish tint to the eyes or gums," said Dr. Stevens. "As a , if you observe these symptoms in your pet, I recommend seeking urgent veterinary care."
Other pet foods affected by recent recalls include Kroger Brand pet food, Jones Natural Chews Pig Ears, Primal Pet Foods, and Purina ONE cat food. In December 2011, the FDA also issued a warning linking chicken jerky to illness in dogs.
