New Patent for Cartilage Repair Issues Under Vet-Stem Stem Cell License

ID: 1100185

(firmenpresse) - POWAY, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/04/12 -- Vet-Stem, Inc. announced that another patent has issued under its exclusive worldwide license with Artecel, Inc. This patent covers using adipose tissue-derived stromal cells for use in repair of cartilage defects in any mammal. This patent will provide coverage for the on-going commercial and development programs at Vet-Stem.

This new patent adds to the other patents in the Vet-Stem portfolio that cover methods of using regenerative cells from adipose tissue for the eye, pancreas, liver, bone and muscle. Vet-Stem has exclusive worldwide rights for veterinary use of these patents (over 50 issued and 70 pending patents) which improves the company's intellectual property position in this rapidly developing field.

As the first company in the world to offer fat derived stem cell services for veterinary use, Vet-Stem has rapidly developed the market, providing stem cells for treatment of over 8,000 horses, dogs and cats. "Intellectual property rights can be confusing in a rapidly developing market with evolving technology," said Bob Harman, DVM, MPVM, CEO of Vet-Stem. "We needed to do everything possible to protect the market that we are creating in regenerative veterinary medicine and to ensure that the value of the company is optimized. The value of this technology has increased greatly since the founding of the company in 2002 as the business model, therapeutic activity of the cells, and ease of tissue collection have all been demonstrated."

Vet-Stem also has the only RACE (Registry of Approved Continuing Education) approved online regenerative medicine course for veterinarians and has trained over 3,000 veterinarians.

About Vet-Stem, Inc.

Vet-Stem, Inc. was formed in 2002 to bring regenerative medicine to the veterinary profession. This privately held company is working to develop therapies in veterinary medicine that apply regenerative technologies while utilizing the natural healing properties inherent in all animals.

In January of 2004, Vet-Stem introduced the first veterinary stem cell service in the United States. Since that time there has been rapid adoption of this technology for treatment of tendon, ligament, and joint injuries by the veterinary community. Studies have shown that mesenchymal stem cells can dramatically improve the healing of injuries and diseases that have had very few treatment options in the past.
