Budget Cuts: Hundreds of Public Service Professionals Receive Notices

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/04/12 -- Public service professionals targeted by federal government cuts today started to receive notices that their positions may be eliminated, according to Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC). The federal government has certainly wasted no time in implementing the destructive program laid out in its 2012 Budget.

Work Force Adjustment (WFA) letters were sent to over 400 PIPSC members who are employed at National Defence, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Western Economic Diversification, Economic Development Agency of Canada for Quebec Regions, the Public Service Commission and the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.

"While it is far too early to assess the full impact of these cuts on services to Canadians, we can already see that regions and communities that face economic hardship are not being spared," said PIPSC President Gary Corbett. "Regional economic development agencies are a perfect example of good government jobs generating even more jobs where they are most needed."

Under WFA, more employees are generally declared "affected" than will be declared "surplus" at the end of the process. Given the large target for cuts set out by the federal government, the stress and uncertainty for public service workers and their families will be intense and widespread.

"Our members can count on the full support of the Professional Institute. We will work tirelessly to ensure that their rights under the collective agreement are respected," emphasized Corbett. "And all Canadians can be assured that we will stand up for the programs and services that they depend on."

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents some 60,000 professionals and scientists across Canada's public sector. It is a founding member of Professionals Serving Canadians (PSC), a coalition of six concerned public service unions who believe that the Harper government's plan to slash programs and services across the government will have serious repercussions on the well-being of Canadians, their families, and their communities.
