Government of Canada Delegation to Mark 95th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge in France
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/04/12 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, will lead an official delegation to France to mark the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The delegation will be in France from April 7 to 11.
The delegation travelling overseas includes representatives of Veterans' organizations, the Department of National Defence and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, parliamentarians and media. In addition, close to 5,000 Canadian students will participate in events marking the anniversary.
"On April 9, Canadian youth, members of the Canadian Forces, representatives of Veterans' organizations and parliamentarians will join with international representatives in remembering and honouring those who fought at Vimy," said Minister Blaney. "Our Government is proud to honour the brave men and women who served our country in the defence of peace, freedom, democracy and the rule of law."
The delegation's first experience after arriving in France will be a guided tour of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial. The majestic and inspiring monument is Canada's largest tribute overseas to those Canadians who fought and gave their lives in the First World War. It stands as a memorial to all who served our country in battle, and particularly to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
"Canadians fought with pride and conviction when they captured Vimy Ridge 95 years ago," said Minister Blaney. "The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is a symbolic and lasting testament to the sacrifices made by Canadians during the First World War to make our country what it is today."
Commemorative ceremonies marking the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge will also be held in Ottawa and in communities across Canada.
In addition to participating in the commemorative ceremony at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, the delegation will visit the Bois-Carre Cemetery and Canadian Artillery Memorial in Thelus, France. The delegation will also spend a day in Belgium to participate in private wreath-laying ceremonies at the New British Cemetery, the Hill 62/Sanctuary Wood Memorial and the St. Julien Memorial, as well as taking part in the daily ceremony at Menin Gate.
