Cycle Tour of South Africa – Mountain biking the wild coast
The Drakensburg Mountains provide the perfect conditions for a mountain bike tour. They are the highest mountain range in Southern Africa, rising to 3,482 meters in height. This cycle tour of South Africa leads along the cyclist at first along the wild coast, the most remote region of the region. It is also one of the most least-ridden trails in South Africa, making for a real adventure.

The stretch between Port Grosvenor and Mbotyi Lodge is a particular highlight of this cycle tour of South Africa. Initially following single trails along the coastline, the cycling is broken up by a 2 hour hike. And worth the effort it is too. Cascading spectacularly into the sea, Bluff Waterfall is the highest in the world. The magnificent views of Cathedral Rock, a free-standing cliff rising out of the sea, are also something not to be missed. The waves that crash against this giant create a real natural spectacle. The trail then continues along the coast, soon arriving at a beautiful lagoon, where the cyclists will spend two comfortable nights.
Even after 9 days of exploring this stunning region, the adventure doesn’t let up. Part of the journey includes a bike climb up to the only ski resort in southern Africa. At a heady altitude of 9,500ft the trail leads past Loch Ness dam, and although the oxygen may be in short supply, the views certainly aren’t. The breathtaking views of across the western Drakensberg are something to behold. Rare bird species such as the Cape vulture are also to be found here. To experience this part of the world by mountain bike is truly unique, and simply further confirms it’s natural beauty and fascination.
