Healthy Aging: The Secret is in the Way You Move
(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/03/12 -- Science really has uncovered the secret to staying young - or at least delaying the onset of debilitating age-related problems. The fountain of youth has turned out to be a regular fitness regime that keeps people mobile. As long as you keep moving, your body will delay the onset of disability, dependence and chronic disease according to landmark international studies.
One reason mobility is a key player in healthy aging is that any kind of exercise from vigorous high intensity CrossFit workouts to gardening, dancing and walking helps to delay the shortening of telomeres, which are found at the tips of chromosomes. Shortened telomeres are associated with aging, including memory loss. As we engage in mobility exercises the body sends out rejuvenating chemicals to our cells, delaying the aging process. Those people who are sedentary show decreased levels of mobility - the less they move, the more broken down their body becomes.
For Marian Marshall, 57, finding a fitness lifestyle in her early fifties completely changed her aging process. From feeling frumpy, grumpy and tired all the time, by incorporating walking and strength training into her daily life she quickly saw healthy aging benefits.
"Since becoming more mobile, I can do things faster, and mentally I am more alert. I just feel happier," says Marian. "Plus people say I look younger now than I did five years ago."
