ANIMAL ALERT: Tall Tails Doggie Day Care Advises Baby-Proofing Pets
The Birth of a New Child Requires Major Adjustments on Behalf of All Family Members -- Including Pets; Tall Tails Doggie Day Care Recommends Baby-Proofing Pets to Create a Safe Environment for Newborns
(firmenpresse) - WOBURN, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/03/12 -- Preparation for a new baby often begins months before that baby is born. From purchasing clothing to decorating the nursery, new parents begin the adjustment process prior to bringing their newborn home. Sue Manning of the Detroit Free Press, in a recent , suggests that pets should become involved in the preparation process. Tall Tails Doggie Day Care agrees, asserting that including pets in this process will make their adjustment to the new baby easier.
For dogs, Manning cites the new sounds and smells that accompany a child as the most important factors for new parents to consider. A dog's sensitive senses will pick up on many unfamiliar things, such as the sound of a rattle or the smell of the baby. Manning suggests exposing dogs to these sounds and smells before introducing them to newborns. She cites the example of Mary Brown, who "took out the stroller and pushed it around her dog" to acquaint her with the unfamiliar item.
Likewise, Mary Brown's husband brought one of the baby's hats home for the dog before Mary and their son were released from the hospital. This allowed the dog to get familiar with the scent and, when the baby came home, recognize it as something that belonged in the house. The Browns further coached the dog into accepting the baby by giving her treats when she behaved well around the newborn.
"Having a new baby is a tremendous adjustment," commented Jordan Holt, the owner of . "The entire family, pets included, must change their routines to accommodate the infant. By 'baby-proofing' pets, or preparing them for the new arrival, parents can make the transition into this unfamiliar situation a bit easier for both themselves and their dog."
In addition to introducing new sounds and smells, expecting parents are encouraged to prepare their dogs to listen more attentively to commands like sit, stay, and down. Setting these boundaries before the arrival of the child will make it easier to enforce them after the new baby comes home.
"The reaction dogs have to new babies varies greatly," stated Holt. "Some dogs are protective, some are excited, and others may seem jealous. The key is to continue to give your dog attention while welcoming the new baby into the family. Most of all, preparing for the baby before it arrives will allow dogs to feel less anxious about this new child."
