Fraser Institute's Ontario Secondary School Rankings for 2012 Now Available

ID: 1098657

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/01/12 -- The Fraser Institute today published its annual rankings of Ontario secondary schools, showing which schools across the province are improving, or falling behind, in terms of academics.

"For parents who want to find out how their child's school is doing compared to others in their community, the Fraser Institute school report card is the No. 1 source," said Michael Thomas, Fraser Institute associate director of school performance studies.

The rates 718 public, Catholic, and francophone secondary schools across the province based on seven key indicators using data from the annual provincewide tests of literacy and math administered by the Ontario government's Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).

The report card displays individual school results for the past five years, showing whether schools have improved or fallen behind over time. It also includes key information about each school's make up, including parents' average income, the percentage of ESL students, and the percentage of special needs students. Results of the report card are available in an interactive and searchable format or as a free PDF at .

According to the report, 15 of the 20 fastest-improving secondary schools in Ontario have average parental incomes below the provincial average. At one of these schools, special needs students make up more than half of the student population; at another, ESL students account for 48 per cent of total student enrollment. The complete list follows.

"Academic excellence is possible in every school, regardless of the personal and family circumstances of its student population. Without provincewide testing and the Fraser Institute report card, measuring academic improvement and identifying success stories like these would be impossible," Thomas said.

The report card also points out that 26.6 per cent of secondary school exams written in 2011 scored below the provincial standard, compared to 30.1 per cent in 2007.

"This is a solid five-year improvement, but more than one in four of the provincewide tests written by Ontario secondary students still fail to meet the provincial standard. Ontario schools can do better," Thomas said.

"The Fraser Institute's school report card is the only source for long-term, provincewide school performance data that helps parents monitor the performance of their child's school and helps educators identify key areas for improvement in their classrooms."
