Canadian Launch of UN Women's Flagship Report Marks a New Milestone for Women's Equality

UN Women's flagship report, Progress of the World's Women: In Pursuit of Justice was launched in Canada on March 22nd, 2012 with a panel discussion on gender equality, and women's legal rights moderated by , Senior Business Correspondent for CBC news at Glenn Gould Studio.
Almas Jiwani, President of National Committee and renowned international humanitarian provided the opening remarks and issued a powerful appeal to guests in several languages to support the United Nations' Entity, UN Women that has established itself as the powerful driver for gender equality and women's human rights since its launch in 2011.
Following Jiwani's address to civil society CEOs, community leaders, corporate decision makers, legislators and government entities, the report launch transitioned into an engaging panel of prominent experts on women's equality. , author of the UN Women's Progress Report; , Vice President for CBC English Services; Mike Layton, Ward 19 Councillor; and , VP, International Programs, PLAN Canada provided insightful remarks on the report's content and answered the audience's questions on how to forge creative partnerships for collaborative action on women's rights.

Stewart made poignant points about the media's evolving impact on gender equality, noting the challenges of getting certain programming viewed in less progressive countries.
The closing remarks were given by renowned actress , who called on all women to push boundaries in order to achieve gender equality. Commenting on her experience after the event, Ray said, "Participating alongside some of Canada's most powerful women such as Almas, Kirstine, Amanda and various esteemed guests has generated valuable momentum for women's rights. It was an enjoyable experience working with UN Women Canada and I feel humbled to have contributed to an excellent cause. The event was a great opportunity to learn and teach each other about the various challenges that women face across the world in accessing their legal rights and attaining equality."
During the final remarks of the event, the Executive Advisory and the Board of Directors of UN Women Canada National Committee and the audience paid a standing tribute to Ms. Jiwani in recognition of her never ending international achievements and tireless efforts to advance the cause of underprivileged women around the world.
