There's a reason Clark Kent had to ditch the glasses to fight crime - a superhero can't risk foggy lenses while flying through the sky. But we can't all have superhuman vision. A recent survey conducted by demonstrates that foggy lenses are not just a plight experienced by a bespectacled few; a resounding 96 per cent of Canadian glasses wearers confirmed that their lenses had experienced fog.

Essilor Canada, the leading manufacturer of eyeglass lenses, surveyed Canadians who have experienced foggy lenses, revealing the dangers, embarrassments and frustrations associated with lenses that fog. While a majority of respondents (81 per cent) found foggy lenses to be a problem when going from outside to inside temperatures, fog affected glasses wearers in many everyday situations, including cooking (34 per cent) and spending time outdoors (20 per cent).

I can see clearly now, the fog is gone

Many respondents reported feelings of frustration (46 per cent) due to the phenomenon of foggy lenses, with simple tasks such as entering the house in winter leading to a temporary loss of clear vision. Whether you are skiing, driving or taking the bus, you don't have to be a superhero to reap the benefits of fogless lenses.

"For Canadian glasses wearers, foggy lenses have long been a problem with no real solution - until now. To help consumers see clearly, Essilor has developed ™ technology, a new lens innovation that provides long-lasting, fog-free vision," says Catherine Quezel, Brand Marketing Manager, Essilor Canada. "Glasses wearers no longer have to worry about the embarrassments or frustrations of fog and can feel safe when doing any activity."

I can see all obstacles in my way

Over half (52 per cent) of survey respondents admitted that they had experienced an embarrassing - and potentially dangerous - moment when their glasses have fogged. This includes walking into something (27 per cent), failing to recognize a familiar face (21 per cent) and tripping or falling down due to foggy lenses (14 per cent).

Foggy lenses may cause more than embarrassment - 47 per cent of respondents reported feeling unsafe when their glasses fog. Of these, 43 per cent said foggy lenses have made them feel unsafe when driving, with an alarming 20 per cent of those admitting to having removed their glasses while behind the wheel due to fog.

"Glasses undoubtedly improve the quality of life of the wearer, but when the lenses become more of a burden than an aid due to foggy lenses, this can leave the wearer feeling vulnerable and defenseless," says Quezel. "Essilor Canada believes that the new Optifog™ technology will empower glasses wearers to feel safer and more confident regardless of the situation or location."

Respondents also felt unsafe due to foggy lenses in the following situations: cooking (28 per cent), doing outdoor activities (26 per cent), working (17 per cent), taking public transit (12 per cent), in the bathroom (11 per cent), skiing (11 per cent) and cycling (10 per cent).

Gone are the foggy lenses that had me down

Despite still needing to see, 33 per cent of respondents have removed their glasses while walking due to their lenses fogging up, while 19 per cent did so while working. Finding a solution to foggy lenses is critical to continued safety and productivity, no matter the activity.

"Fog can be a problem for glasses wearers year-round. Foggy lenses can occur when drinking a hot beverage or even working, especially in jobs where safety or precision are important, such as a surgeon wearing a mask," said Dr. Lawrence MacAulay, of Armstrong Optometry in Armstrong, B.C. "Initial consumer feedback about Optifog™ has been incredible. It's given glasses wearers a new-found freedom; they love being able to see clearly without worrying about fog."
