Following the nuptials of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last year, The Queen's Diamond Jubilee will be one of the biggest celebrations Britain has ever seen, but anyone planning on staying close to the action will have to be quick. Over a million people are expected to turn out to watch the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, a spectacular procession of some 30,000 people on 1,000 historical vessels that reflect Britain's maritime history.
The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant features ten groups of boats that include the 88ft rowing barge Gloriana, the "Little Ships" of Dunkirk and the replica Golden Hinde. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will travel on The Spirit of Chartwell, a Thames sailing barge converted into a colourful 18th-century royal galley. This will lead a huge flotilla, estimated to be more than seven miles long, that will make the journey from Putney to . Fireworks and music from every decade of the Queen's reign will add to the excitement.
As the bridges along the Thames will be closed to pedestrians during the Jubilee Pageant, anyone wanting to get close to the action will need to find a position along the banks of the river.
