ID: 1097098

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/27/12 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today visited Ottawa's Operational Stress Injury Clinic which treats and supports individuals living with mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety issues, depression or addiction.

"We recognize the seriousness of operational stress injuries among Canadian Forces members, members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Veterans and their families," stated Minister Blaney. "That is why our Government has been taking action to provide our Veterans and men and women in uniform with the help and support they need when they need it."

Between Veterans Affairs Canada and the Department of National Defence, there are 17 specialized operational stress injury clinics across the country. The Ottawa Operational Stress Injury Clinic was opened in 2009 and is one of nine specialized outpatient clinics funded by Veterans Affairs Canada. The other clinics are located in Fredericton, Quebec, Montreal, London, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. There is also a Residential Treatment Clinic at Ste. Anne's Hospital near Montreal.

"As a specialized mental health centre, The Royal is unique in offering an interdisciplinary model of treatment. Our focus is on recovery and on offering the best care to the men and women who have served our country," said George Weber, President and CEO of the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group.

The Ottawa clinic, managed by The Royal, provides specialized mental health services to Veterans, Canadian Forces members and eligible Royal Canadian Mounted Police members, as well as their families. An important feature of the clinic is the ability for patients to have immediate and continuing access to a team of mental health specialists throughout their treatment. This includes psychologists, psychiatrists, mental health nurses and social workers. The clinic has the capacity to treat up to 150 patients at any given time.

Veterans Affairs Canada's Mental Health Strategy is a key element in the overall implementation of the New Veterans Charter established in 2006. One aspect of the strategy is working with service providers across the country in enhancing the capacity to assess and treat Veterans living with operational stress injuries. This includes the operational stress injury clinics and the social support provided by peer and family support coordinators. Individuals may also call the Veterans Affairs Canada Assistance Service line at 1-800-268-7708, which operates 24 hours a day.

To date, Veterans Affairs Canada is helping approximately 15,000 Canadian Armed Forces members, Royal Canadian Mounted Police members, Veterans and their families with mental health conditions.
