Pensioners Have No Confidence in Flaherty's Backward Budget
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/27/12 -- The National Pensioner and Senior Citizens Federation (NPSCF) will be on Parliament Hill on Thursday, March 29th to respond to the budget to be announced by Finance Minister Hon. Jim Flaherty.
As this is the first budget in the first year of the majority Harper government's mandate the NPSCF is convinced that we will witness a decline in progress on seniors' issues.
"Retirement Security is being systematically dismantled for most Canadians under this regressive regime", stated NPSCF President Barry Thorsteinson in Ottawa today. Pension plans are under attack in the public and private sectors with the full encouragement and participation of the government. Only one-third of Canadians are able to buy RRSP's and the government has already decided to abandon plans to improve CPP benefits and instead set up another voluntary scheme to buy risky investments from their friends in the financial services industry. Next we will see the retreat on OAS benefits for future seniors.
Seniors deserve better and we have the wealth in this country to do better. In early February the NPSCF executive met with government officials to argue for improvements for seniors, especially those living in poverty. The Parliamentary Budget Officer and various respected economists have proven that we can sustain OAS benefits. We also made the case for leadership from the Federal Government on a National Pharmacare Program, health care issues and housing for those in need. (See our complete brief at: )
The NPSCF is the only Pan-Canadian Seniors Federation that meets annually in Convention to determine policy on seniors' issues in open and democratic debate. Our national membership stands at a million pensioners within 250 affiliates from coast to coast. We have seniors representing seniors, not paid staff, and we do not profit from the seniors we represent.
