COFI Welcomes Prime Minister's Commitment to Free Trade With Japan

ID: 1096579

(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/26/12 -- The Council of Forest Industries (COFI) today welcomed the announcement by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and International Trade Minister Ed Fast that Canada will be pursuing a free trade agreement with Japan. "Japan has been a major customer for our lumber and panel manufacturers for several decades," stated John Allan, COFI President and CEO. "The partnership forged with Japanese clients is founded on mutual respect and recognition by both sides that the products Canada produces and systems Japan builds are ideal combinations. A free trade agreement can only strengthen and further solidify this relationship."

COFI has a long history of market development in Japan starting in the early-1970's when it first opened an office in Tokyo. The Council was a founding member of the Japan 2X4 Homebuilder's Association and provided critical support in drafting Japan's light wood-frame construction building code. In recent years COFI has worked closely with Japanese interests to advance the use of wood construction in institutional and commercial applications.

The Japanese market typically accounts for between $350 and $400 million in Spruce-Pine-Fir (SPF) lumber sales annually. Historically Japan has been Canada's second largest export market until recently edged out by an emerging China market. Japan is a highly valued market by Western Canadian SPF producers due to its high sales realizations and reputation for demanding the premium quality lumber available from Western Canadian mills.

The Council of Forest Industries is the voice of the BC interior forest industry. COFI works with governments, communities, organizations and individuals to ensure that forest policies in BC support the forest sector and, as a result, those who are dependent on the sector for business income or family supporting jobs. COFI works within the national and international (Japan, China, Korea) Canada Wood partnership to improve market access at home and overseas and to increase demand for our members' products.
