Climate Change Initiative to Fund New Research
(firmenpresse) - MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwire) -- 03/26/12 -- A new federal research initiative will improve understanding of the climate and the atmosphere. As part of the Next Phase of Canada's Economic Action Plan, a Low-Tax Plan for Jobs and Growth, the Government of Canada is providing $35 million over five years to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to support climate change and atmospheric research at Canadian post-secondary institutions. The call for letters of intent for the was announced today by the Honourable Larry Smith, Senator for Saurel, Quebec, on behalf of the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology.
"Canada has a world-class capacity for climate change and atmospheric research," said Senator Smith. "This funding will help us advance previous research and develop policy strategies in response to climate change."
"This initiative further demonstrates our government's commitment to combating climate change," said the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister. "The CCAR grants will harness some of the world's best minds to advance climate studies, and it serves to further reinforce Canada's position as a global leader in climate research."
The CCAR initiative will award grants of up to $5 million over a maximum of five years to large, integrated projects involving university researchers, Canadian government scientists, and partner organizations.
"This initiative is designed to address identified national research priorities, including some global challenges," said Suzanne Fortier, President of NSERC. "Scientific research is a vital component of understanding and mitigating the social, economic and environmental impacts of climate change that are being experienced in the Arctic and throughout the country."
Research proposals for CCAR funding must cover one of the following three themes:
Applicants must submit letters of intent by May 17, 2012, for a preliminary evaluation of their proposals. Those invited to submit full applications will go through a competitive peer review process culminating in the grants being awarded in late 2012.
NSERC is a federal agency that helps make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for all Canadians. The agency supports some 30,000 post-secondary students and postdoctoral fellows in their advanced studies. NSERC promotes discovery by funding more than 12,000 professors every year and fosters innovation by encouraging about 2,000 Canadian companies to participate and invest in post-secondary research projects.

Climate Change and Atmospheric Research Initiative
The health and safety of Canadians and the strength of the Canadian economy rely on advancing our understanding of climate, mitigating risks related to climate change, and developing effective policies that will allow us to anticipate and respond to these risks in a timely manner. Climate Change and Atmospheric Research (CCAR) Grants will capitalize on Canada's world-class research capacity in key areas of climate and atmospheric research and innovation. Funded projects will generate knowledge of the physical, chemical and biogeochemical processes related to the climate and atmospheric system and enable application of this knowledge towards understanding and predicting weather and climate. This research is necessary for conducting further studies and assessments of the social, economic and ecological impacts of climate change. Knowledge generated through this research will provide the foundation for measures that minimize economic impact, maximize economic opportunity, and improve the lives of Canadians.
The CCAR initiative will support a number of large, integrative projects involving university researchers, Canadian government scientists, partner organizations, and international researchers as appropriate. This initiative will encourage the training of students and other highly qualified personnel in these fields.
Research proposals for CCAR funding must cover one of the following three themes:
Applicants must submit letters of intent by May 17, 2012, for a preliminary evaluation of their proposals. Those invited to submit full applications will go through a competitive peer review process culminating in the grants being awarded in late 2012.
Grants will be valued between $500,000 and $1 million per year, over a period of up to five years.
