Minister MacKay Announces New Facility at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton
(firmenpresse) - CFB EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/23/12 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, today announced a new $54 million building which will serve as the final step in the consolidation of operations at Canadian Forces Base/Area Support Unit (CFB/ASU) Edmonton. This new facility will accommodate Land Force Western Area Headquarters, Joint Task Force West Headquarters, and 1 Area Support Group Headquarters, and will replace the separate sites which currently house these organizations, thereby increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the base.
"I am excited to announce a new Area Headquarters which will play a vital role in the command of Canadian Forces operations here in Edmonton," said Minister MacKay. "This facility is part of our Government's plan to create a modern, first-class military that is able to serve Canadians and Canadian interests wherever they are called upon. Work associated with this Area Headquarters will also be a boon to Edmonton's local economy."
In accordance with the Canada First Defence Strategy, there is a need to update and replace dated defence infrastructure to meet the challenges of the 21st century. This project, valued at approximately $54 million, involves the construction of an 8159 m2 building. The construction of the new facility should be completed by November 2013, and approximately 161 jobs will be generated as a result of this project.
The new Area Headquarters offers the opportunity for regular interaction and coordination between the three organizations, cost savings by sharing common areas, and adequate space for all personnel and equipment. The expansion and reorganization of existing capabilities, as well as the establishment of new capabilities of the Canadian Forces, has contributed to the ongoing transformation of CFB/ASU Edmonton.
The Government of Canada has conducted an open, fair, and transparent competition processes and has awarded a contract to Pentagon Structures Ltd. of Edmonton, Alberta, for the construction of the facility.
