(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MANITOBA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/22/12 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, in a speech today to the Frontier Centre for Public Policy said that system-wide regulatory review of major resource projects is key to future jobs, growth and prosperity for the people of Manitoba and all Canadians.

"Manitoba has a highly diversified economy, and the resource sector continues to play a prominent role in generating jobs and economic growth. Natural resources account for about 8.0 percent of Manitoba's GDP, as well as 5.3 percent of jobs," said Minister Oliver. "The natural resource sector is crucial not only to Manitoba but also to Canada's economy at large."

Minister Oliver emphasized the important work the Government of Canada is doing on modernizing the review process for major projects to ensure future economic prosperity and energy security.

"Regulatory modernization is a key priority for our Government," said Minister Oliver. "We are committed to ensuring that Canada can attract the capital it needs to develop its natural resources and to build the infrastructure to move these resources to new markets."

"We can achieve a regulatory system that protects Canadians and the environment, while helping to ensure future prosperity for Canadians across the country," said Minister Oliver. "We can do this by providing reviews that are more predictable and timely and by reducing regulatory duplication. At the same time, we can protect the environment and address the legitimate concerns of Canadians, including Aboriginal people."

While in Winnipeg, the Minister hosted a roundtable with representatives from the Mining Association of Manitoba to discuss issues and opportunities for the industry. The Minister also held meetings with First Nations leaders, including Grand Chief David Harper, to discuss natural resources.

Minister Oliver wrapped up the day by touring Rodren Drilling Ltd., a Manitoba-based exploration diamond drilling company whose expertise and state-of-the-art equipment is used by many mining companies throughout Canada and in China.
