Sami Bittar, M.D. Pioneers New Breast Reconstruction Surgery
The One-Step Procedure, Which Is Particularly Beneficial to Cancer Patients, Has Fewer Surgeries, Less Scar Tissue and a Pleasing Aesthetic Outcome
(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 03/21/12 -- Sami Bittar, M.D., a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, offers a new, one-step breast reconstruction technique known as a Single-Stage Anterior Approach Latissimus Flap and Permanent Breast Implant. The details of this procedure will be published in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal in May of 2012. Dr. Bittar has performed more than 1,400 Single-Stage Anterior Approach Latissimus Flap and Permanent Breast Implant procedures.
A typical two-stage breast reconstruction begins with a process to expand the muscles that are necessary to cover the implants. Patients undergo surgery, which typically requires a one- to two-day hospital stay, for the expander to be inserted. Following surgery, patients visit the doctor's office once or twice a week for the next six to eight weeks so fluid can be injected into the expander, allowing the muscles to gradually be expanded.
A second surgery then removes the expanders, inserts a permanent implant and adjusts the resulting pocket. Patients who require chemotherapy must wait for the treatment to be complete before proceeding with the muscle expansion and permanent implant. Dr. Bittar's procedure uses the pectoralis muscle -- one traditionally used in a breast reconstruction along with the serratus muscle -- as well as the large and dispensable latissimus muscle in the back.
However, Dr. Bittar harvests the latissimus muscle from the front -- instead of the back -- and uses the mastectomy incisions to do so, eliminating the need for extra incisions in the back. Ample muscle coverage and skin eliminates the need for a skin expansion, which allows a permanent implant to be inserted and the breast reconstructed in a single step. The single-stage anterior approach latissimus flap reconstruction offers several advantages to patients:
The emotional, physical and financial stress associated with two surgeries is reduced since only one surgery is required.
Chemotherapy can proceed as needed, without interruption.
Scarring on the back is reduced.
A more favorable aesthetic outcome.
Dr. Bittar is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the highly coveted American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, and numerous other professional societies.
