Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, took part in an event designed to recognize the sacrifices made by Canadian Forces members, past and present. This event, organized as part of the Memory Project of the Historica-Dominion Institute's Speakers Bureau, brought together 100 students from Secondary 2 (Grade 8) at Aubier High School and 50 or so Veterans and members of the Canadian Forces. Through the Veterans' accounts, the students gained a better understanding of the sacrifices that were made.

"Thanks to the important work of the Memory Project and the Speakers Bureau of the Historica-Dominion Institute, Veterans have a way to share the incredible stories that have shaped our collective history," said Minister Blaney. "Our Government is proud to support events that engage Canada's youth in remembrance while honouring the sacrifices of our Veterans and service men and women."

Three Veterans shared their stories with students. Whether about Canadian participation in the Korean War, the many UN and NATO missions or the mission in Afghanistan, the stories provided a better understanding of the significant contributions made by Canadians and conveyed the importance of remembrance.

"Events like the one held today help ensure that the memory of our Veterans is kept alive," said Minister Blaney. "We must engage youth and make them aware of the important contributions of those who served and those who continue to serve Canada today."

Launched in 2001, the Memory Project organizes meetings between Veterans and students in countless schools across Canada. The Memory Project Speakers Bureau has over 1,500 volunteers throughout Canada who visit classes and community groups to share their stories with young people.
