(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/20/12 -- The MS Society of Canada proudly announces the recipient of its "David L. Torrey endMS Transitional Career Development Award," Dr. Jorge Alvarez of the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre (CRCHUM).

The award provides successful post-doctoral and clinical fellows with $500,000 to fund the last two years of their MS-focused fellowship and the first three years of their first faculty position in a Canadian institution.

Dr. Alvarez completed his Ph.D. at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He moved to Canada to pursue his post-doctoral fellowship with Dr. Alexandre Prat at CRCHUM.

"This award is an opportunity to make the transition from trainee to independent researcher," says Dr. Alvarez. "It recognizes the potential of trainees like me for further developing our careers, being able to provide knowledge to the research community and finding solutions for those affected by MS, who are ultimately the driving force of our endeavours."

"I strongly believe that this award along with the other research programs supported by the MS Society will further enhance our understanding of MS," says Dr. Alvarez.

The award is supported by a gift of $500,000 from Mr. Torrey to the endMS campaign, a $60 million initiative designed to attract, train and retain researchers in the field of MS and to accelerate the search for a cure. Mr. Torrey is a longtime MS Society volunteer and donor with a passion for innovative research that is promising in its impact on people with MS. He is a former investment banker who retired as vice chairman of RBC Dominion Securities and served as a director on several Canadian and U.S. companies.

"I am excited about being able to support one of our best research talents," says Mr. Torrey. "The work of researchers like Dr. Alvarez leads to real, everyday improvements in the life of people with MS."

Dr. Alvarez's research focuses on central nervous system (CNS) barriers. In particular, his work looks at the meninges (the system of membranes which envelops the CNS) and the choroid plexus (which secretes cerebrospinal fluid) which may be directly involved in MS-related inflammation. He hopes to use the award as the basis to build a research platform which focuses on generating novel and applicable research for people with MS.

"Supporting the development of the next generation of MS researchers is vital in continuing Canada's progress and discovery in the field of MS," says Dr. Karen Lee, vice president of research at the MS Society of Canada. "We thank Mr. David Torrey for his financial grant to help us achieve this and we look forward to seeing Dr. Alvarez further his contribution in MS research."

The 2009 winner of this award, Dr. Stephen Kerfoot, was recently awarded a faculty position at the University of Western Ontario. The award played an important role in ensuring he is supported in critical moments of his career transition.
