Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act: May 29, 2012, Petition Deadline Approaching
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/20/12 -- The opportunity for Canadians to petition for the designation of lighthouses under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act is drawing to a close. Residents of Canada may nominate any federally-owned lighthouse for designation by forwarding a petition to Parks Canada on or before May 29, 2012. To date, 122 lighthouses have been nominated for designation through the petition process.
Lighthouses have long graced Canada's rugged coastlines and majestic shores. They form an integral part of Canada's identity, culture and heritage. The Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act protects the heritage character of lighthouses designated under the Act.
The Act depends on Canadians to support lighthouses by nominating them for designation through a petition. Petitions must be addressed to the Minister responsible for Parks Canada, be signed by at least 25 residents of Canada who are 18 years of age or older, and specify the lighthouse being nominated for designation. Only federally-owned lighthouses are eligible for designation.
For additional information on the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act, please see the accompanying backgrounder at under Media Room, or visit the Heritage Lighthouse Program website at /lighthouses for more detailed information on the Act or to obtain a nomination package.
