Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages and The Berry Company Collect More Than 60 Tons of Outdated Directories as Part of Annual 'Think Yellow Go Green' Recycling Program
(firmenpresse) - OAHU, HI -- (Marketwire) -- 03/19/12 -- Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages in conjunction with its sales agent, The Berry Company, LLC, announced that with the strong support of the local community, were able to recycle more than 60 tons of outdated telephone directories. Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages and Berry partnered with West Oahu Aggregate, HPOWER, the Lokahi Giving Project and several area shopping malls to carry out a month-long recycling effort as part of its annual Think Yellow Go Green program.
For more than five years, Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages and Berry have been dedicated to keeping directories out of landfills through recycling. This year was no exception as the community collected over 60 tons of outdated directories. HPOWER converts the reused directories to refuse-derived fuel, which generates electricity for more than 40,000 homes.
"This year's program was a great success," said Ray Carulli, client services regional director of The Berry Company in Oahu. "We are thrilled we were able to recycle over 60 tons of outdated directories. We want to thank the community for its outstanding support."
During the recycling program, members of the Lokahi Giving Project staffed the drop-off locations. Oahu residents dropped off their outdated telephone directories at four shopping malls on the island: Ward Centers, Windward Mall, Kahala Mall and the Town Center of Mililani.
West Oahu Aggregate, local specialists in waste management solutions, picked up the directories and delivered them to HPOWER. The recycler processed the books into refuse-derived fuel, generating up to 57 megawatts of energy for Hawaiian Electric Company.
