The Harper Government Announces Support for Portage College to Boost its Heavy Equipment Operator Training Program
(firmenpresse) - LAC LA BICHE, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/19/12 -- Today, Brian Jean, Member of Parliament for Fort McMurray- Athabasca, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced Government of Canada support towards an initiative that will enhance Alberta's workforce in heavy equipment operation.
A federal investment of $500,000 through Western Economic Diversification Canada will enable Portage College to acquire heavy equipment machinery for its Heavy Equipment Operator Training Program in Boyle, Alberta. The initiative will provide students with hands-on training on various types of machinery used in oil sands operations to excavate, grade, and landscape earth or to move materials and equipment.
"Our Government's top priority is job creation and economic growth," said MP Jean. "This initiative will help to develop a highly skilled and flexible workforce, while ensuring small-and medium-sized businesses remain competitive in the local and global marketplace."
The Heavy Equipment Operator Program is expected to help address the demand for skilled heavy equipment operators and enable small- and medium-sized businesses to take advantage of the economic opportunities generated by oil sands activities in northern Alberta. In addition, since graduating students are not expected to require additional training upon employment, hiring companies will be able to lower their overhead costs while increasing their efficiency and productivity.
"The investment in equipment has made our program more accessible and will lead to more employment possibilities for our graduates," said Stuart Leitch, Dean of Community and Industry Training Initiatives for Portage College. "Through this initiative, we are ensuring our students are equipped with the ability to make an immediate and positive impact on businesses that rely on heavy equipment operators."
Portage College's 16-week Heavy Equipment Operator Training Program will consist of instructor-led classes, practical skills training on the heavy equipment machines, completion of safety tickets and standardized testing to ensure all students have a proficient level of skill and competency in heavy equipment operation.
Western Economic Diversification Canada funding for this project builds on its previous investment of $195,000 towards enabling Portage College to acquire heavy equipment simulators for its Heavy Equipment Operator Training Program.
Western Economic Diversification Canada works with the provinces, industry associations and communities to promote the development and diversification of the western economy, coordinates federal economic activities in the West and advances the interests of western Canadians in national decision making.
