Government of Canada Celebrates Ontario Grain Industry's Success
(firmenpresse) - LONDON, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/19/12 -- Grain farmers in Ontario will continue to help drive economic growth with the support of the Government of Canada. Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture Pierre Lemieux, on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, addressed delegates at the Grain Farmers of Ontario annual general meeting today to highlight the important economic role of the Ontario grain industry.
"Our government's top priority continues to be the economy, and the grain industry is a major contributor to jobs and economic growth in our province," said Parliamentary Secretary Lemieux. "Ontario grain farmers have shown for years how successful a voluntary marketing system can be, and our government is proud that western farmers can finally take advantage of the same opportunities that have benefitted Ontario farmers for several years."
The Government of Canada believes all farmers in this country should have the right to make their own business decisions, which is why it has enacted the Marketing Freedom for Grain Farmers Act. An open grain market attracts investment, encourages innovation, creates value-added jobs, and builds a stronger economy for all Canadians. Marketing freedom has helped strengthen the Ontario industry, and it will breathe new life into the western Canadian wheat industry by opening up exciting new opportunities for all grain growers.
The Government of Canada's top priority remains the economy, in which the grain industry plays an important role in creating jobs and keeping the economy strong. In 2011, Ontario`s grain farmers brought $2.5 billion to the farm gate and generated more than $850 million in exports.
