Fuel efficiency can start before the driver is even in the vehicle - checking the tyres before a journey could highlight one of the main areas that can lead to more fuel being used than is usually necessary. Whilst driving, aggressive acceleration and constant 'stop start' movements can all waste petrol or diesel and should therefore be avoided.
Carrying more weight than is needed is a big factor as far as commercial vehicles are concerned. To combat this, it is important that only essential equipment is carried to and from jobs - if a ladder isn't required for work, it makes little sense to take one. Even empty roof racks can increase aerodynamic resistance, slowing a vehicle down and meaning that more fuel is being used than ordinarily would be.
