ID: 1093479

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/16/12 -- Almas Jiwani, President of UN Women Canada National Committee, will host a luncheon at Glenn Gould Studios to launch UN Women's flagship report "Progress of the World's Women - In Pursuit of Justice" with moderator, Amanda Lang, Senior Business Correspondent for CBC News. The event, to be held on March 22, will include guest speakers on the discussion panel such as Ms. Laura Turquet, author of the UN Women Report, Ms. Kristine Stewart, Vice President for CBC English Services, Mike Layton, Ward 19 Councillor and Dr. Tanjina Mirza, VP, International Programs, PLAN Canada. Rose Handy, CEO of Bilingual Link Canada, will host the event.

"The report is an important tool for women's advocates and policy makers since it highlights the practical barriers that women face in negotiating justice systems and the innovative approaches that governments and civil society are pioneering to overcome them," says Jiwani. "I am delighted to bring so many prominent people from different sectors together today to shed light on these issues," she adds.

"Progress of the World's Women: In Pursuit of Justice" is UN Women's first major report, following the organization's launch in early 2011. It recognizes the positive progress made - 139 countries and territories now guarantee gender equality in their constitutions, for example - but also shows that too often, women continue to experience injustice, violence and inequality in their home and working lives. Drawing on tangible examples of steps that have been taken to help women access justice, the report sets out ten key recommendations for policy and decision makers to act on in order to ensure every woman is able to obtain justice.

"The powerful message of this Report is that progress is both possible and urgently needed. Where laws and justice systems work for women, they can be a foundation for gender equality," said Laura Turquet, the author of the Report. "While the Report shows that Governments and civil society in every region are making important progress, it is also clear that we have a long way to go until women become men's true equals in the eyes of the law - in their home and working lives, and in the public sphere," she added.

More countries have gender equality legislation than ever before but many laws are inadequate and rarely if ever enforced. "Women's rights and gender equality - in every region of the world - are issues we cannot afford to ignore, and I'm really looking forward to moderating this important conversation," states Amanda Lang, Senior Business Correspondent for CBC, Moderator of the panel discussion.

Singer/songwriter and two-time Juno award nominee Belinda Brady will give a unique performance at the Report launch, in honour of women around the world.

The event is open to the media. It will be held at the CBC Glenn Gould Studios on March 22, 2012, from 12 pm - 2pm.
