EuroCIS: Bizerba presents flexible hardware and software systems

(firmenpresse) - Balingen, 28 February 2012 – EuroCIS 2012 is just around the corner. 200 exhibitors from 20 countries will be presenting the latest IT trends for the trade from 28 February to 1 March in Düsseldorf. Bizerba will be showcasing the following products: the K-flex PC scales/checkout system, the Scale Pad, a set of self-service scales that identifies items automatically and the Retail Framework software family (hall 09, booth G48)

The K-flex: keeping up with the competition throughout the checkout evolution

There was a time when a checkout system was expected to do nothing more than collect customers' money. A blissful situation for shop owners. But that time is coming to an end. For a communication evolution is well and truly underway: smartphones have been an unprecedented success, featuring a rapidly increasing number of functions, which also affect the checkout.

For example: "The customer collects coupons online using his smartphone and wants to redeem them at the checkout the next time he goes shopping," explains Rainer Maase, Management of the business division Retail (market organisation Germany). "Obviously, this only works when PC technology – in other words, the right hardware and software components – has been integrated into the checkout system". And that's exactly what Bizerba has done: at EuroCIS 2012, it will be presenting the K-flex, a modular scales and checkout system.

The central unit and cash drawer, printer and scanner and operator and customer displays can be positioned separate from one another, wherever there is space. The best thing about it? The K-flex is designed according to open standards. Maase says: "This means that shop owners can expand the system at any time to suit their needs. They can even use software and hardware components from third-party suppliers in order to facilitate new functions. In doing this, Bizerba is keeping up-to-date and abreast of the competition throughout the checkout evolution". Because at the end of the day, you never know what incredible things smartphones will be able to do in a few years – or what demands they will place on shop owners.

Not the iPad, but the ScalePad

The idea is simple but great – and currently the only one of its kind on the market: Bizerba has developed a weighing board that integrates into the counter top, meaning that it can be used even in the smallest of spaces.

It functions simultaneously as a work surface for hygienic cutting and features an integrated draining channel. It can be used in butchers and delicatessens as well as bistros, snack kiosks and bakeries.

Self-service scales recognise products automatically

Familiar with the tiresome game of weighing products yourself? And having to find the right product on a large list? Bizerba has developed a set of self-service scales that identifies fruit and vegetables automatically using a camera. It analyses the form and colour, size and surface and offers the customer four item options.

And then it starts to learn: the more often the scales receive feedback from customers, the more intelligent they become. After a while, the database is so well-developed that recognition rates of over 98 per cent are possible. Both shop owners and customers will benefit from fast weighing and labelling, particularly at peak times.

More fresh goods mean a greater need for better inventory management systems

People are demanding more and more fresh goods. All the time. And that means shop owners are faced with considerable challenges: they have to manage goods flows centrally and adapt them to the relevant local sales conditions in real time. What does that mean? For example: If, two hours before the close of business, there are too many strawberries left, it isn't exactly useful if the shop owner doesn't find out about this excess until the next day. Because they are no longer fresh. Meaning goodbye to a decent margin.

It would be much more logical to always be able to see the most up-to-date sales figures, to be able to reduce the prices promptly and to communicate the reduced prices to all cash registers, scales, price labellers and digital displays as quickly as possible. That's how things work with the Bizerba Retail Framework software family.

All controlled devices signal that they have adopted the new prices – like a package with a return receipt. The principle of openness also applies here: the software is designed according to open standards. Therefore, you can even use the software in stores that don't work with Bizerba devices.
