Labour Minister Appoints New Arbitrator in Canada Post Dispute
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/14/12 -- The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, appointed Mr. Guy Dufort as the arbitrator in the labour dispute between Canada Post Corporation and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) - Urban Operations Unit, effective March 19, 2012. Mr. Dufort replaces the Honourable Justice Coulter Osborne who resigned from the position in November.
"Mr. Dufort's law career spans over 45 years, during which he has specialized in labour and human rights, and civil litigation. He has also worked as an arbitrator and mediator dealing with employment matters and labour rights for the past three years," said Minister Raitt. "I urge both parties to cooperate fully with him."
Mr. Dufort is fully bilingual and has experience in labour relations. The Minister consulted with both of the parties on the choice of the arbitrator.
Mr. Dufort will be responsible for settling the labour dispute between CUPW and Canada Post and imposing a new collective agreement. In the coming weeks, both parties will meet with Mr. Dufort to present their final offers. The arbitrator must render his decision within 90 days of his appointment, unless an extension is provided by the Minister of Labour.
