(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/08/12 -- Today the Canadian Journal of Nursing Leadership is releasing a special issue entitled Applied Workplace Solutions for Nurses - the Research to Action Project. The journal offers an overview of the Research to Action project, an initiative of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU). Research to Action was comprised of pilot projects in nine provinces and one territory to implement evidence-based strategies with the objective of improving workplaces and increasing the retention and recruitment of nurses. The CFNU partnered with the Canadian Nurses Association, the Canadian Healthcare Association and the Dieticians of Canada to oversee the project. To view the journal online, visit: .

The pilot projects involved innovative strategies that brought research to action, including programs that address staffing ratios, new mentoring and training programs, critical care and emergency nursing education programs, enhanced training for nurses new to caring for the elderly and on-line orientation programs. The projects relied on the strength of partnerships between employers, unions, governments, universities and other health care stakeholders in each jurisdiction. Each received funding support from Health Canada, as well as their provincial/territorial partners.

"Canadian frontline nurses are grateful for this landmark national initiative. We have years of research linking positive work environments with reduced health care costs and better patient care, and it was high time to take the research off the shelf and bring it to life in the workplace," says Linda Silas, President of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions. "Nurse turnover rates are still high and costly; the cost of paid overtime was $660 million in 2010, while the cost of sick time was $711 million. Changing workplace culture takes more than two years, and so it is extremely important for all involved to continue such positive initiatives," continued Silas.

The RTA projects offered nurses an opportunity to acquire new skills and to share what they learned with their colleagues. The evaluation showed an overall 10% reduction in overtime, sick time and turnover rates. For more on the evaluation, see the article by Dr. Gail Tomblin Murphy in the new publication.

The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) is Canada's largest nurses' organization representing over 160,000 nurses. Visit our website at .
