SmithGroupJJR Hires Jon Romig, Strengthens Laboratory Planning Expertise

Romig will head the firm's laboratory planning and programming activities, mentoring staff and offering project planning and design expertise. He will also aid in business development pursuits throughout the Midwest, cultivating relationships with strategic new client targets in the science and technology, healthcare, higher education, and private sectors.

Romig has been a leader in the laboratory facility design community for nearly 30 years. He joins SmithGroupJJR from EwingCole in Philadelphia, where he served as director of science and technology for the past two years. Prior, from 2006-2009, Romig led the multi-office science and technology workgroup at The S/L/A/M Collaborative in Boston, Mass.
Romig's career has been marked by involvement in a range of notable planning, construction and renovation projects for Emory University; Swarthmore College; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; University of California, Los Angeles; Genzyme Corporation; Boehringer Ingelheim; and Merck, among others. He has provided a range of oversight, programming, planning and design services for prominent projects, including a campus and facility master plan encompassing one million square feet of genetics research, vivarium and support space for The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine; and programming and design for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's 331,000 square foot Biomedical Science Tower III in Pittsburgh, Penn., which received a Laboratory of the Year Special Mention award in 2007.
Romig graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a bachelor's degree in architecture and a bachelor of fine arts degree. He is an active speaker in the science, technology and laboratory planning and design arenas. Past engagements include notable conferences hosted by Tradeline and Laboratories for the 21st Century. Romig has also presented in conjunction with the Association of Independent Research Institutes (AIRI) and Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL), one of the leading advocates in the U.S. for building and sustaining strong undergraduate programs in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
