Prime Minister's Advisory Committee Calls for Transformative Change in the Public Service

ID: 1091157

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/08/12 -- The sixth Annual Report of the Advisory Committee on the Public Service, presented to Prime Minister Stephen Harper today, stresses the need for a positive vision for the future of the Public Service, better people management and the need to harness the potential of Web 2.0 technology.

The Report examines the ongoing efforts to make Canada's Public Service more efficient and effective. It looks at the effects of the deficit reduction action plan; the creation of Shared Services Canada; the key elements of 21st century organizations; the importance of people management; and the need for long-term thinking. It makes recommendations on how to manage this transformational change; notes where caution is in order, and looks toward new opportunities.

"Charting a successful course through the next few years will call for courage, imagination and agility from the Government of Canada and from the leaders of Canada's Public Service," the Report states.

The spending restraint measures the Government has taken in recent years - and others to come - reflect a determination to fundamentally rethink the role of the Public Service and how it serves Canadians. The Public Service will need to further transform itself and adapt to new contexts for policy-making and service delivery.

The Committee makes three main recommendations in this year's Report.

The Prime Minister's Advisory Committee on the Public Service is comprised of nine eminent Canadians. It is co-chaired by the Honourable Paul Tellier and the Honourable David Emerson. It was created by the Prime Minister in 2006 to advise him and the Clerk of the Privy Council on the renewal and future development of the Public Service of Canada.
