Protect Missouri Workers Urges Nixon to Stand Up for Missouri
(firmenpresse) - JEFFERSON CITY, MO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/07/12 -- Today the Missouri House of Representatives approved Senate Bill 572 by a vote of 87-68, sending it to the Governor's desk for his signature or veto.
Despite pleas from various legislators including Rep. Jake Hummel (D-St. Louis), Protect Missouri Workers feels the legislative body has chosen to place profits over people by protecting corporations who knowingly exposed their employees to cancer-causing diseases, leaving Missouri workers out in the cold.
"This is a sad day for the Missouri worker. Deadly occupational diseases caused by toxic exposure on the job have no place within the worker's compensation system. This severely limits a retiree's or employee's ability to recover benefits or protect their families after their death, which frequently occurs within two years of diagnosis," said Bob Kelley, Chairman of Protect Missouri Workers. "These are diseases that could have been prevented. We are talking about employers knew the risks of exposure and never told their employees or took precautions to protect them, and now the Missouri General Assembly has chosen to protect these companies, disenfranchising the Missouri worker. I urge Governor Nixon to stand up for real Missourians and veto this irresponsible legislation."
