Eco-Friendly Calgary Water Centre Uses Reliance Foundry Bollards for Pedestrian Safety
(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/01/12 -- is Calgary's first eco-friendly and people-friendly office building. The Water Centre brings together around 775 professional and field staff from the administrative, engineering and operation services of the Water Resources and Water Services of Calgary.
The Water Centre has been carefully designed to improve the health and wellness of its occupants and encourage workplace productivity through innovative architectural and operational designs. Part of the design includes many sustainable elements including a green roof and rainwater harvesting. The roof of the building sweeps up and over in a curved arch adding an interesting look to the Water Centre.
With all of the considerations taken for the occupants inside the building, it is also necessary to provide protection for pedestrians who are outside of the building. Without precautions in place, snow and ice could slide from the roof during the cold winter months and land on pedestrians. To address this hazard, an addition was constructed on the curved roof to direct any sliding snow or ice onto the landscaped areas, instead of onto the walkways.
To help ensure pedestrians don't leave the designated walking paths and veer onto the landscaped areas, contractor Brent Keller of oversaw the installation of along the path. The bollards are connected with chains and run the length of the building.
"The bollards are used to stop people from leaving the sidewalk area where there is potential for snow and ice from the rook to fall and strike a person" Mr. Keller said, "A separate roof addition was added this year to prevent the snow and ice from landing on the sidewalk area and move it out to the landscaped areas. Thus the bollards and signage are installed to stop people from going beyond the sidewalk edge."
Pedestrian protection is a common use for bollards in landscaped areas around busy buildings and parks. With the many decorative styles, available colours and installation options, Reliance has products to compliment any architectural decisions.
The simple, straight shape of this bollard works well with the vertical panes on the windows of the building. 95% of the interior of the building is day lit by direct sunlight, due to all of the window coverage.
The model R-7902 bollard used in this project can be installed as either fixed (immovable), removable or as a bollard cover over a steel security post. The Calgary Water Centre chose to have these steel bollards powder coated in an anodized silver color; all of Reliance Foundry's bollard are available in several, , and many models are also available in stainless steel.
