There are a lot of discussions as to the cause, but while that is being debated hospitals need to take actions to reduce the threat and prevent a tragedy.

In the last year there have been several shootings within hospitals. They have involved murder and/or suicide, where a family member murders their relative that is a patient, and then shoot themselves. There have also been cases where hospital staff was also shot either because they tried to intervene or were blamed for the relative's condition or lack of care.

White reminds hospital administrative staff that there are in many cases warning signs. Each and every time there is an identified threat there needs to be a threat assessment conducted by a qualified professional. This is not an area to be sparing with on, as a substandard assessment may lead to a serious incident that could result in death.
