67th Anniversary of the End of Canadian Participation in the Italian Campaign
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 02/24/12 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today issued the following statement to mark the 67thanniversary of the end of Canadian participation in the Italian Campaign.
"Tomorrow marks the 67th anniversary of the end of Canadian participation in the Italian Campaign-one of the longest struggles of the Second World War. Of the more than 93,000 Canadians who served in this campaign, nearly 6,000 would lay down their lives to protect Canadian values.
Canadian troops played a vital role in the 20-month Mediterranean campaign. They fought in Sicily from July 10 to August 6, 1943, and then landed on the Italian mainland on September 3, 1943. Canadians fought a bitter battle until February 25, 1945, when Canadian participation in the Italian Campaign came to an end. They faced difficult battles in the dust and the heat of summer, the snow and the cold of winter, and the rain and the mud of spring and fall. They fought for peace and freedom-the same values our military men and women continue to defend today. Their selfless commitment and loyalty reminds us of what it means to be Canadian.
We honour this legacy by caring for the Second World War Veterans who are still with us and the brave men and women who have carried on their proud tradition of service.
Our Government has continuously stood up for our Veterans and our men and women in uniform. We will continue to stay the course and provide our heroes with the care and support they need and greatly deserve."
