Minister Duncan Celebrates Grand Opening of the Vancouver Island Mountain Sports Centre
(firmenpresse) - MOUNT WASHINGTON, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/22/12 -- Today, the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, officially opened the new Vancouver Island Mountain Sports Centre at Mount Washington Alpine Resort.
"I am pleased that our Government has delivered on this commitment for Mount Washington residents," said the Minister Duncan, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. "Our investment helped to create jobs and stimulate the economy. This modern, accessible alpine facility will not only further engage future Olympians, but also encourage public participation in mountain sports and outdoor education."
Funding of over $1.1 million was provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) program as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Island Coast Economic Trust, Coast Sustainability Trust, and Comox Valley Regional District also contributed funds to the project. Funding supported design of the facility, site preparation, construction, interior finishing, and overall project management.
The new fully adapted community facility will now serve to provide groups, disabled individuals, seniors, youth, and emerging athletes in mountain sports with improved access to affordable wilderness and outdoor activities. This project is a key resource for the local sport tourism economy, and will strengthen the region's ability to attract and host sporting events from the international community.
"We are proud to see our vision come to fruition," said Rick Morson, Chair, Vancouver Island Mountain Sports Society. "The Mountain Centre will serve as a central training hub and as a staging facility for camps, outdoor education trips, courses and retreats. This project is a unique asset and true legacy for future generations."
The Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) program is a $1 billion investment in local economies throughout Canada to create jobs and maintain employment in our communities. Visit the websites for the (CAF) program in the West, or Canada's for more information.
