Tech Council of Maryland Honors UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski With Lifetime Achievement Award
Hrabowski to Be Honored at Black Tie Gala in Bethesda on February 29
(firmenpresse) - ROCKVILLE, MD -- (Marketwire) -- 02/22/12 -- The Tech Council of Maryland (TCM), Maryland's largest technology and biotechnology association with more than 400 biotechnology and technology members employing more than 200,000 in the region, will honor Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), with its second annual Lifetime Achievement Award. Hrabowski will be presented the award at TCM's , which is taking place February 29 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.
The TCM Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an individual who has gone above and beyond the excellence expected of a business executive over the course of a career by also serving the community at large. The recipient must have demonstrated generosity and compassion, along with business savvy -- ensuring that his or her lasting legacy encompasses both corporate success and community involvement.
"Freeman is extraordinarily deserving of this honor for his dedication to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and for his efforts to increase the representation of minority students in STEM programs," said Art Jacoby, TCM's interim CEO.
Hrabowski has been instrumental in making UMBC one of the nation's top producers of technology graduates and in substantially increasing the number of African American undergraduates majoring in science or engineering during his tenure. Hrabowski joined UMBC in 1987 as vice provost, and within a year had partnered with Baltimore philanthropist Robert Meyerhoff to create the Meyerhoff Scholars program, which provides comprehensive support and scholarships to African American men interested in science and engineering. Hrabowski became UMBC's president in 1992, and in 1996, the Meyerhoff program was opened to students of all races and genders. Today, approximately 2,000 high school seniors are nominated each year by their teachers for one of the 60 spaces for students entering the Meyerhoff program. Hrabowski has received numerous other honors for his work. In 2008, U.S. News & World Report named him one of "America's Best Leaders," and in 2009, he was named one of the "Top 10 College Presidents" by Time Magazine. In 2011, The Washington Post and Harvard's Kennedy School named him one of their Top American Leaders. That same year, Hrabowski received two of the highest honors in higher education: TIAA-CREF's Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence and the Carnegie Corporation's Academic Leadership Award. Among other honors, Hrabowski has received the U.S. Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Monitoring, and was named "Marylander of the Year" by the Baltimore Sun and one of Fast Company Magazine's first "Fast 50 Champions of Innovation" for business and technology.
