Police Chief Calls On-Officer Camera a "Game Changer"

According to a February 16, 2012 news report by WCCO CBN News 4, Burnsville Police are crediting the use of a TASER® device for avoiding tragedy after a knife-wielding suicidal man walked into its police station. The entire event was captured on TASER International's .
According to the news report, Officer Dave Luchsinger was just finishing a police report when a man who was cut on his neck and bleeding entered lobby of the Burnsville Police Department.
"Drop that knife! Hey! Drop it! Put that down! Put that down," yelled Burnsville Police Officer Luchsinger as the man walked through the lobby doors.
"I drew my gun thinking I need to shoot this guy to protect me," he said.
Officer Luchsinger immediately called for emergency backup.
"I could tell the urgency in his voice," said Officer Brad Litke. "I jumped up from my computer. Me and the Sergeant are both running to the lobby at the same time. And he asked me if I had my TASER on me, which I said, 'yea!' And just got my gear on, and soon as we opened the door, I see the guy standing right in front of me."
Officer Litke pushed open the lobby door, but immediately, Officer Luchsinger yelled for him to get back.
Seconds later, Officer Litke pushed open the door again, deployed his electronic control device which immediately incapacitated the suicidal man and allowed officers to safely subdue the man.
The entire incident was captured by an AXON on-officer camera worn by Officer Luchsinger.
"So we've got a recording of what we're doing, and what other people were doing," he said.
Police Chief Bob Hawkins calls them a "game changer," because if anyone questions an incident, they can just go to the video that about two dozen of its officers wear.
Officers Luchsinger and Litke received Awards of Honor recently from the Dakota County Chiefs of Police Association for how they handled the situation. The awards were handed out by Eagan Police Chief James McDonald, who is also the president of the association.
"Sometimes we have to do some difficult and challenging things, so it's good to be recognized for that," said Officer Luchsinger.
