Minister Kent Launches First Episode of "Operation Unplugged" TV Series
(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 02/17/12 -- The Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today launched the first episode of Operation Unplugged, and introduced the cast and host of this exciting new TV documentary-adventure series. This new Parks Canada youth initiative follows a group of young Canadians who give up their personal techno-gadgets, and experience incredible adventures in the wild of Canada's national parks and historic sites.
"Canada's future lies in the hands of its youth," said Minister Kent. "This is why I am excited to be introducing this fun and original initiative that will inspire young Canadians to learn more about Canada's treasured places."
Minister Kent and Alan Bishop, host of Operation Unplugged, joined guests and the cast to launch episode 1 during a pre-screening evening event held at the CN Tower in Toronto. The series follows eight techno-dependent post-secondary students as they explore Parks Canada places in ten national parks and national historic sites and compete in missions along the way under the guidance of Alan Bishop and Parks Canada staff. The winner will win a trip for two to Nahanni National Park Reserve and attend an international conference with representatives of Parks Canada. The cast is made up of four men and four women between the ages of 18-42.
Parks Canada collaborated with GlassBOX Television, HLP+Partners, and Via Rail Canada to produce this six-episode weekly documentary-adventure show that begins airing on February 21, 2012 on the Travel + Escape channel. The episodes will also be available 24 hours after they air at .
"Broadcast initiatives like Operation Unplugged, as well as other flagship Parks Canada youth initiatives, such as My Parks Pass, Xplorers and the recently-announced Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Parks Canada Youth Ambassador Program all provide excellent opportunities for young Canadians to be inspired to better connect with our natural and historic heritage," added Minister Kent.
Canadians can also join in Operation Unplugged by visiting and participating in online missions inspired by the TV series.
"I encourage all Canadians to sign up, login and start exploring operationunplugged.com, and discover what Parks Canada's network of 42 national parks, 167 national historic sites and four national marine conservation areas has to offer," concluded Minister Kent.
