Governments of Canada and Alberta Announce Oil Sands Research Agreement
(firmenpresse) - EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/16/12 -- An agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta will help to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in the oil sands industry. The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, and Alison Redford, Premier of Alberta, announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will lead to the development of new and improved oil sands technologies, resulting in a smaller environmental footprint and creating new jobs for Canadians.
"We are committed to continue working with the Government of Alberta to overcome the unique technological and environmental challenges associated with oil sands development," said Minister Oliver. "This agreement will allow the oil sands to continue to grow the economy and create jobs while reducing the environmental footprint through new and improved oil sands technologies."
"Research is how we are going to find solutions to the challenges we currently face, and may face down the road, as we continue to develop the oil sands," said Premier Redford. "Because we need to be more than a preferred international supplier of energy. We must also become a preferred international supplier of innovation."
The oil sands are a key national strategic resource that contributes to economic opportunities and energy security for Canada, North America and the global market. Government support for cutting-edge energy technologies, like those associated with the oil sands, is creating high-quality jobs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping Canada emerge as a responsible global energy superpower.
This MOU will create a cluster of expertise that fosters collaboration on the sustainable use of the oil sands resource among which industry, academia and other research organizations will be encouraged to participate. The research will be led by Natural Resources Canada's CanmetENERGY and Alberta Innovates Technology Futures to help the industry achieve excellence in innovation and the responsible development of the oil sands.
The agreement builds on a history of collaboration in oil sands heavy oil research and work done by the National Centre for Upgrading Technology, which was created in May 1995 as a research program co-managed by the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta.
