ID: 1083953

(firmenpresse) - KAHNAWAKE, QUEBEC -- (Marketwire) -- 02/16/12 -- The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, and Michael Ahrihron Delisle, Jr., Grand Chief of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake, announced today the conclusion of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Kahnawake-Canada Relationship.

"This memorandum of understanding is another positive step for the relationship between Canada and the Mohawks of Kahnawake. We will be working together to find practical and pragmatic ways to identify opportunities to strengthen economic growth and job creation in the community," said Minister Duncan.

Through this MOU, both parties will continue to strengthen their relationship by exploring ways to improve current approaches to land management, development, and membership in Kahnawake and to realize the full potential of the community.

"We are confident that this memorandum of understanding will give both Kahnawake and Canada a better way to deal with issues of mutual concern. We are prepared to begin working towards solutions as soon as possible," said Grand Chief Michael Ahrihron Delisle, Jr.

The MOU sets out a process for developing approaches and options for improving land management in Kahnawake and responding to issues regarding membership in the First Nation over a period of three years.

"This memorandum of understanding shows what can be accomplished when partners work together," said Senator Larry Smith. "This provides a firm basis for Canada and Kahnawake to move forward together in building a better future for the community."

The Mohawk community of Kahnawake is located 10 km southwest of Montreal, on the south shore of Lake Saint-Louis.
