Former NHLer Sheldon Kennedy to Receive Humanitarian Award
- Swift Current Declares February 18th Sheldon Kennedy Day -
(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/15/12 -- Former National Hockey League player and co-founder of the Respect Group will receive the 2012 Scotiabank Humanitarian Award for Lifetime Achievement on Friday in Swift Current, Saskatchewan.
The Scotiabank Humanitarian Award is given to individuals or groups whose activities have enhanced the development of healthcare. Recipients must exemplify the qualities of compassion and humanitarianism; are recognized with the ability to model and communicate those values; and inspire the next generation to create awareness, build knowledge and inspire humanity. The award was created by the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation which helps the Cypress Health Region provide quality medical services to the residents of Southwest Saskatchewan.
In the words of the judges, "Mr. Kennedy exemplifies humanitarian service - actions beyond the responsibilities of one's profession or corporate mission, resulting in the improvement of the welfare of humankind; the understanding that true compassion is based not on our own projections and expectations, but rather on the rights of the other; the compassion is universal in scope. It is also accompanied by a feeling of responsibility."
Details of award ceremony are, as follows:
On Saturday, Sheldon Kennedy will drop the puck at the opening face-off for the Swift Current Broncos' home game against the Saskatoon Blades. The City of Swift Current has also officially declared February 18th as "Sheldon Kennedy Day".
