First, there was the rally for better transportation for people with disabilities, now, members of Vita Community Living Services will rally together to celebrate a brand new option for getting around. On Tuesday, February 28, 2012, Vita Community Living Services will be unveiling their new MV-1, a vehicle specifically designed for the needs of wheelchair users, received through the efforts of Rally for Vita, a motorcycle rally held this past fall.

The MV-1 is the first vehicle specifically developed for the transportation of people with physical disabilities. Built and designed in the United States, the vehicle has been designed with both the access requirements and social inclusion of those with mobility needs in mind.

"It's nice to finally have a vehicle, purposely built for those of us with disabilities rather than one that's been cut apart and adapted for our needs," said Dave Hingsburger, Director of Clinical Services for Vita and a wheelchair user, "This means that people with disabilities will no longer be regulated to the back seat but finally can sit up front." Marisa Perri, who rode in the vehicle during the Rally for Vita, echoed this sentiment, stating that she loved riding up front.

The Rally for Vita took place on Sunday, September 25, 2011 and raised money for the purchase of the MV-1; featuring a motorcycle rally from Toronto to Barrie, it was the first such annual event. The 2012 event will take place on Sunday, September 16, 2012, with all funds raised allotted for the MV-1.

Vita Community Living Services serves communities in Toronto and York Region, providing residential services, day programs, and job training and support for people with intellectual disabilities, some of whom have physical disabilities.
