Government of Canada Seeking Interest in AECL Laboratories
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 02/09/12 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today launched a process inviting Expression of Interest in the activities of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL's) Nuclear Laboratories.
This process will allow the Government to benefit from the experiences of organizations, domestic or international, involved in the management or restructuring of nuclear science and technology or radioactive waste management.
The information gathered through this process will help inform the restructuring process, a critical step to further strengthen Canada's nuclear industry while reducing taxpayers' exposure to financial risks in this sector.
AECL's Nuclear Laboratories include two main sites: Chalk River Laboratories (CRL), located in the Province of Ontario, 190 km northwest of Ottawa, and Whiteshell Laboratories, located at Pinawa, Manitoba. The Laboratories are home to researchers with unique capabilities and expertise. Specialized facilities support key nuclear science and technology priorities that include innovation for industry, safety, security, health, environmental, waste management and clean energy technologies.
The Government of Canada will continue its role in maintaining safety, security and environmental stewardship in all aspects of the nuclear industry. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Canada's nuclear regulator, will continue to regulate all parts of the entire nuclear industry in Canada.
