Canadian Forces Members Among the First Recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Medal
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 02/06/12 -- Canadian Forces (CF) members were among the 60 recipients presented the first Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Medals today at Rideau Hall. His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, presided over the inaugural presentation ceremony along with the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada.
"As we mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the Throne, I believe it is appropriate to recognize the important work that our military accomplishes everyday by awarding 11 000 Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee medals to our members," said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence. "Members of the Canadian Forces dedicate themselves to the service of their fellow citizens, and to Canada."
The Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Medal will be presented throughout the year to 60 000 deserving Canadians to celebrate significant contributions and achievements. Approximately one in every ten CF members will receive the medal.
"As Chief of the Defence Staff, I appreciate that 11 000 Diamond Jubilee Medals are available for presentation to the most deserving of our men and women in uniform," said General Walt Natynczyk. "This is the most significant allocation of commemorative medals in the history of the Canadian Forces. I see this as a signal of just how much Canadians value the service of their sons and daughters in uniform to our great country. We are proud to serve Canada and to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty's reign."
As directed by General Natynczyk, the selection of CF recipients will be based on merit and exceptional service. As such, the CF will follow a process similar to that used for the Order of Military Merit. This method will ensure all recipients are truly deserving of the award, and are serving as an example to their peers.
The Department of National Defence's Directorate of Honours and Recognition will be responsible for the allocation and distribution of this medal to CF recipients. Once the nominating commands have completed their selection, the medals will be sent to the recipients' units for presentation throughout the year of celebration.
Of note, a portion of the allocation of medals reserved for the Public Service has also be allocated to the Department of National Defence in order to recognize its most deserving public servants who to support the men and women of the CF.
