Networking Portion of Event to Focus on Employment Opportunities

(firmenpresse) - ROCKVILLE, MD -- (Marketwire) -- 02/01/12 -- The Tech Council of Maryland (TCM), Maryland's largest technology trade association with more than 400 biotechnology and technology members employing more than 200,000 in the region, today announced that U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, M.D., will be the featured speaker at its first MdBio Leadership Series networking breakfast, scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on February 10, 2012, at the Pooks Hill Marriott in Bethesda. Following the keynote address, attendees are invited to stay to network with hiring managers, who will provide information about employment opportunities at their companies.

"We are excited to welcome Commissioner Hamburg to speak before our members," said Doug Doerfler, chairman of the board of directors, MdBio Division of the Tech Council of Maryland, and president and CEO of MaxCyte. "We share the Commissioner's goals of updating and modernizing the FDA to ensure a science-based regulatory approach that will result in the timely review of innovative products, and help Maryland's leading edge biotechnology companies to turn hope into cures."

Dr. Hamburg has been FDA Commissioner since May 2009, when she became only the second woman to be nominated for the position. Before joining the FDA, she worked at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, where she was first founding vice president for biological programs and then served as the group's senior scientist. From 1997 to 2001, Dr. Hamburg was the Assistant Secretary for Policy and Evaluation in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and prior to that was commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for six years, during which time she was the youngest person ever elected to the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Hamburg graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed her residency in internal medicine at what is now New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. She conducted research on neuroscience at Rockefeller University, studied neuropharmacology at the National Institute of Mental Health, and later focused on AIDS research as assistant director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

During her keynote, Dr. Hamburg will discuss the importance of the biotech industry to Maryland and the national economy and how regulation is helping protect consumers and the bottom lines of corporations. She also will address how the FDA is a catalyst for innovation and explain the challenges her agency is facing, particularly with globalization.

After Dr. Hamburg's keynote address, MdBio will offer networking opportunities with hiring managers from various local biotech companies, who will talk about current job openings within their organizations. Attendees seeking employment are encouraged to bring their resume.
