InterMed Installs Maine's First Low-Dose Computed Tomography (CT) System
General Electric's New CT Technology Reduces Radiation Dosage by up to 40 Percent; InterMed Houses the Second State-of-the-Art Unit in North America
(firmenpresse) - PORTLAND, ME -- (Marketwire) -- 01/30/12 -- InterMed, a premier healthcare provider in Southern Maine, announced today it has acquired the state of Maine's first low-dose computed tomography (CT) system. The facility's new General Electric (GE) Optima CT660 scanner features technology that reduces patient exposure to radiation by up to 40 percent, while producing high-quality imaging. InterMed is the second facility in North America to install the CT660, which is now available for both InterMed patient and non-InterMed patient use.
The 32-slice GE Optima CT660 replaces the organization's previous CT scanner and produces dramatically less radiation exposure. Traditionally, as the number of slices increases -- providing more and clearer diagnostic images -- the radiation dose also climbs. GE's Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction (ASiR) dose-reduction technology removes any image noise (irrelevant or obstructive detail) that is associated with a higher number of slices.
"InterMed differentiates itself in the community by providing an unmatched level of patient care and staying ahead of physician and patient concerns," said Dan McCormack, CEO, InterMed. "With GE's advanced CT platform, we can protect our patients from unnecessary radiation exposure, without sacrificing the quality of the critical diagnostic information these scans are designed to reveal. We're able to deliver a safer, more powerful and more effective CT experience at a lower cost than the available alternatives."
The Optima CT660 is installed at InterMed's South Portland location and serves a broad range of applications, including angiography, brain, high resolution chest, abdomen and orthopedic. While the system is scalable, modular and compact in design, it is built for patient comfort at every age and size.
Dedicated to improving the health of the patients and communities it serves, InterMed is a premier, multispecialty healthcare provider in Southern Maine, with areas of specialty in cardiology, dermatology, family practice, infectious disease, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, podiatry, sports medicine and travel medicine. InterMed also offers fully accredited laboratory, imaging, outpatient surgery, and physical therapy services. Visit to learn more.
